1980 June - Sterling, Virginia
On June 15, 1980 in Sterling, Virginia at approximately 10:00 p.m., a UFO was
sighted by myself and a next door neighbor. Earlier in the day, a strong
rain storm hit the suburban areas of Washington, D.C. A tornado touched down
momentarily in Sterling and wide spread power outages were reported
throughout the area. Because there was no electric power, my husband and I
decided to have a barbeque for dinner and we invited our next door neighbor
to join us. The three of us sat outside on our back porch, had dinner, and
began discussing our plans to put a sun deck on the back of our house. We got
up from our porch chairs and went into the backyard to visualize what it
would look like. When we stepped into the backyard which was totally dark, I
noticed something moving in the sky out of the corner of my eye. I looked
up and saw a perfect sphere, about the size of the moon. It had a pale,
yellowish-cream-orange color and it glowed. It was completely silent and
moved rapidly across the black sky. My mind said "plane, helicopter,
rocket...?" and then when I realized what I was looking at, I said out loud,
"Oh my God." It was a beautiful sight, but frightening too. It travelled
across the sky moving with a very slight, side-to-side skipping motion. My
neighbor also saw it at the same time I did -- my husband was looking in
another direction. From the time I first saw it crossing the sky until it
tilted up and went into a cloud was about 10 seconds. Since there were no
lights anywhere for miles around, we got a good look at it. I wonder if
anyone else in the D.C. area saw what we did?
